What Exactly are Elopement Vows?
Wedding or elopement vows are the personal promises and commitments two people make to each other during their marriage ceremony. They can express love, devotion, and the intentions a couple has for their life together—emotionally, spiritually, and practically. Vows can be traditional (following religious or cultural wording), personalized (written by the couple), or a mix of both. At their core, wedding vows are a spoken declaration of commitment, marking the moment two individuals choose to unite their lives, support one another, and move forward as partners in marriage.
How to Write Your Vows?
Writing elopement or wedding vows can feel intimidating, but the most powerful vows are simple, honest, and deeply personal...they come from your heart. Here’s an easy, stress-free way to write vows that truly reflect your love story. First grab a piece of paper and start writing what you love about your partner, what made you fall in love with him/her and how did you meet...Start writing about some of your favorite adventures together, favorite memories but also get vulnerable...write about some raw and personal moments that perhaps were tough but inevitably made your love stronger. You don’t need poetic language—truth is more powerful than perfection.
Write like you speak. If it sounds unnatural, rewrite it. A lot of my clients use jokes in their wedding vows and those usually bring a lot of smiles during elopement ceremony...
Tips For Writing Your Elopement Vows
- Start writing your wedding vows few days or weeks before your wedding and let thoughts just come to, but leave some if the vows for your wedding day. Perhaps you can write vows the morning off when emotions are running high, during getting ready pictures.
- Go back to the day you met and the day you realized that person if your person and you want to marry them.
- Use vow books (not only for photos) but for keepsake...your vows are something you will want to go back to many times and possibly you might want to redo your vows year after year, and that way you keep them in a one place you will keep forever.
